Found in Kaniyo pabidi  and bordering Murchison falls national park, the Budongo Forest is a project run by both the Jane Good all Institute and Uganda Wildlife Authority where chimpanzees tracking takes place.

Viewing Chimpanzees in Kaniyo Pabidi rotates around six groups of chimpanzees which are habituated for tracking.

During months of May, June, July and August, there are over a 90% chance of viewing man’s closest cousin  “the chimpanzee” .

However chances of seeing these primates tend to drop 70% in February, March, April , September October and in October, November, December and January. When its food gets scarcer chances of viewing chimpanzees drop to 50%.

Chimpanzee Tracking in Kaniyo Pabidi Sessions

There are two sessions during which chimpanzees can be tracked in Budongo Forest, either Morning or Afternoon session

Chimpanzee Tracking in Budongo Forest is best done early morning around 7.00 am. The guides follow the daily movements of the habituated chimpanzee groups as they search for food.
The fluctuating fruiting seasons of the forest trees is the major determining factor in the chimpanzee’s movements. Some times it can take 30 minutes or all day to see them.

Chimpanzee Tracking in Budongo Forest for 1 Day

Depart from Kampala City at 6 am for your 4 hour drive north to Budongo Forest. You will drive through the Ugandan countryside of Luwero, Nasongola, and river Kafu which alone is worth the trip towards Masindi.

There is lots to see and many fabulous picture opportunities. You will be in a comfortable vehicle, with soft music , an English speaking driver and bottled water for your comfort throughout the journey .

After lunch Chimpanzee Tracking in the Forest of Budongo starts in this original Mahogany Forest. You will be tracking habituated chimpanzees which means used to humans. This is a process that takes several years. They are not tame, but simply used to having humans near them and near them you come and see them up close.

After tracking return to Kampala by 7 pm…a full day, but well worth it and a most amazing and fantastic experience.
